Things I've learned so far

After owning and operating Horvath Specialty Auto for a short period of time, I have  learned a few different things that I thought I would share.
  • The car community is alive and well. In a few short weeks, I have met and talked with some pretty awesome people with stories to share. I detail one of those in my previous blog post, "Covered Up Stingray", but there have been many. Today, I received a call from a random gentleman that lives a few miles from me with a few leads on vehicles he had seen I was looking for. He wasn't going to profit from my purchase of those vehicles--he was simply being a nice guy. I've met a lot of nice people through this venture. Thank you to all of them.
  • Not all laws are conducive to pulling rusty vehicles from fields and barns and putting them back on the road. [Click here for famous movie quote.] 
  • Not everyone is a customer...and that is okay. This is something I should know. I've helped small businesses for a few years and I've said these words. But owning your own business, and especially during the early days, you want to close the deal. I spent some time last weekend better understanding the inventory a local classic car salvage yard has for sale. I traveled three hours round trip, took pictures of 40 cars, got covered in seed ticks, and avoided a few snakes but I didn't close the deal. Was it a wasted trip? No way! I saw cars I had never seen before and one day that trip will pay off. 
  • You can learn a lot by simply asking questions. Whether you are asking a search engine or a known gear head, the information is out there. I have made a few new friends through this process that have a wealth of knowledge. I have found online resources that are operated by experts in this industry. I'm looking forward to passing along knowledge.
